I learnt something interesting on Friday, while watching the first of a new series of Gardeners' World on the BBC (yay!). Peas like nice, deep roots. I'm in north Florida. I've been stuck in the house all weekend because it's COLD outside! Yeah yeah I know you northerners don't want to hear it, but seriously it's not supposed to get this cold - which means most Floridians simply aren't equipped with the right cold weather gear. They're not much to look at yet, but I'm so excited I had to share. I'm growing peas! The biggest ones are two or three inches tall and a lot are just starting to poke out from the dirt. So, yesterday when I went out to my garden for the routine check, I noticed that I had a lot of purple cow peas. A LOT. I had originally planted them for their pretty color, but it has now occurred to me that I should obviously do something with the crop. i planted some alaska peas and for a while they did really well.  then they got some powdery mildew or fungus of some kind.  the package said to water the ground, not the plant because of this problem and tried to keep water off the leaves as much a possible, but what abour rain ( Read more... )

I currently live in an apartment with an 8' by 8' cement patio in the back (south) with dirt around it (so, not screened in and a little room between the patio and the Official Landscape Shrubberies).
